Our planet is in trouble, and we believe everyone is responsible to do their part. While we have always offerred a non-profit web hosting plan that helps a lot of green-oriented non-profits, we wanted to do more. Since 2006 we have made being green part of our mission.
Here is what we are doing to help the planet:
We buy 100% certified renewable energy.
Acorn Host purchases "green certificates" monthly for the amount of energy that is used to run the servers, office equipment, lights, etc. Renewable Energy Certificates (also known as green tags or green certificates) are a simple way to effectively power a business (or your home) on 100% renewable energy resources, without changing electricity providers. We pay for green energy to be put into the power grid equal to the amount of energy we use.Find out more about renewable energy certificates at 3degrees.
Are green certificates the same as "carbon offsetting"?
No. Carbon offsetting is another type of program that lets greenhouse gas producers buy a greenhouse gas reduction source from somewhere else to "balance" their emissions. Learn more about VERs here.
Green tags, in contrast, are about investing in renewable power and paying for the energy you use to come from renewable sources
in the first place.
We work with green-friendly datacenters.
We work with two datacenters, both of which are moving in the "green" direction with energy-efficient buildings, low-voltage servers, recycling, and more. Read more on our datacenter page.
We recycle and reduce.
We recycle, use recycled paper, and use electronic invoices rather than paper ones to reduce the amount of paper we use in the first place. Additionally, much of our company business is conducted online (telecommuting), saving gas.
We donate to green causes.
We donate a third of our annual 3% for Good budget to an organization working on environmental causes.We're also passionate about social innovation.
